Rules for the card game Garbage: Get your cards in order from Ace to 10 before your opponents! Perfect family game. Garbage is also known as Trash or Ten.
About the Game
Garbage (also known as Trash or Ten) is a fun and simple card game for 2 or more players. The game is especially popular with children but can be enjoyed by all age groups. The goal is to be the first to get all your cards in the correct order from Ace to 10.
The game combines luck with simple decisions, and each round becomes shorter as the winner gets fewer cards to arrange. The first player to fill their last single card with an Ace or Jack wins the entire game!

Setup
For 2 players, use one standard 52-card deck (without jokers). For more players, add additional decks to avoid running out of cards:
- 3-4 players: 2 decks shuffled together
- 5-6 players: 3 decks shuffled together
- 7+ players: add more decks as needed
Shuffle the cards thoroughly and deal each player 10 face-down cards. These are arranged in two rows of 5 cards in front of the player. Players are not allowed to look at their cards. The remaining deck is placed face down in the center as the draw pile.
Card Positions
The 10 cards in front of each player represent the positions for cards Ace through 10:
- Top row (left to right): Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5
- Bottom row (left to right): 6, 7, 8, 9, 10
During the game, players try to get the correct card face up in each position. Jacks are wild and can be placed anywhere. Queens and Kings immediately end your turn.
Gameplay
The first player draws the top card from the draw pile:
- If it's a number from Ace to 10, place the card face up in its correct position (Ace top left, 2 next to it, etc.)
- The card that was there is turned over and placed in its correct position if possible
- This continues until the player gets a card that cannot be placed
A card cannot be placed if:
- It's a Queen or King
- The position already has the correct card face up
- It's a number higher than the player's layout (e.g., a 10 when the player only has 8 spaces)
The unplayable card is placed face up next to the draw pile, starting the discard pile. The turn passes to the next player.
Jacks as Wild Cards
Jacks function as wild cards with special properties:
- A Jack can be placed in any available position (where there's a face-down card)
- If you get the correct card for a position that has a Jack, you can replace the Jack
- The replaced Jack can then be moved to another available position
- This provides flexibility and increases chances of completing the layout
Example: You have a Jack in the 3 position. When you get a 3, you replace the Jack and move it to, for example, the 7 position that's still available.
Subsequent Turns
Players who follow can choose to draw either:
- The top card from the draw pile (unknown card)
- The top card from the discard pile (visible card)
In practice, players always choose the card from the discard pile if it fits an available position in their layout. They then continue placing cards until they get one that cannot be placed, which is then discarded to end their turn.
Play continues clockwise around the table.
Winning a Round
A round ends when a player has all their cards in the correct order face up. This player wins the round and gets one fewer card in the next round:
- After first win: 9 cards (Ace to 9, 10s can no longer be placed)
- After second win: 8 cards (Ace to 8)
- And so on...
The winner of each round starts the next round. The cards are shuffled and redealt between each round.
Winning the Game
The game continues until a player has reduced their layout to just one card. This player wins the entire game by filling this last position with an Ace or Jack.
This progressive system makes the game gradually harder for players who are behind, while still giving everyone a chance to catch up.
Variations
There are several popular variations of Garbage:
- Shorter game: Agree that the winner is the first to get down to, for example, 6 cards
- Time limit: Play for a set time or number of rounds, the player with the fewest cards wins
- Rotating start: First player rotates clockwise instead of the previous winner starting
- Different wild cards: Use Kings as wild cards instead of Jacks, or add Jokers
- All face cards wild: Make all face cards wild for easier play
- Bonus chance: In a two-player game, the loser gets 3 free draws after the winner finishes to try to complete their layout
- Flip chance: Losers turn up their remaining cards - if all happen to be in the correct positions, their layout is also reduced by one card
Tips and Strategy
While Garbage is mainly a game of luck, there are some strategic choices:
- Always consider taking the card from the discard pile if it fits your layout
- Place Jacks strategically in positions you have difficulty filling
- Remember which cards have already been discarded to assess probability
- In later rounds with fewer spaces, wild cards become even more important
- Pay attention to opponents' progress
- Keep the pace up - the game should be fast and fun!
Garbage is perfect as a family game or for warming up before more complex card games!
